The French began setting up fur trading posts in the area of Indiana in the 1720's.  They traded items with the Indians in exchange for furs of animals such as the beaver and the otter.  Catholic missionaries arrived in the area around 1732.  They wanted to tell Indiana's Native Americans about Christianity.
