Books-2
We have 25,000 books in the library! This does not include any of our digital collection.
You may check out 5 books at a time for a lending period of 3 weeks. Each book is stamped with the due date in the inside cover. You can sign up for a text message reminder of your due date.
The shortcut URL to the library catalog is bit.ly/ihslibcatalog. You can access it from your phone as you walk around the library. There's also a catalog tab open on the sign-in ipad. You can use it if there's a not a line behind you.
Fiction
Fiction takes up the entire left side of the library. It is divided into genres. Each genre has a color-coded sticker on the side, the first letter of the genre displayed on the front of the bookcase, and a small sign to the left of the first few books.
For example, here's how Mystery is marked. (only not sideways)
These are the genres in alphabetical order:
- Action/Adventure
- Classics
- Dystopian
- Fantasy
- Historical fiction
- Horror
- Humor
- Mystery
- Realistic fiction
- Romance
- Science fiction
- Sports fiction
- Supernatural
Plus, we have a Rapid Reads section. It's a mix of all the genres. They're books to read when you're short on time.
Below is a Genre Quiz. It's quick and fun. Try answering the questions a few different ways to see what genre you should try next.

College & Career (CC)
These two shelves are in the middle back of the library. They contain information about many careers and help with college admissions.
Why is this sideways???
Graphic Novels
Just to the right of the CC section is a tall shelf that has graphic novels on it all the way around. Since you can check out five books at a time, graphic novel readers can zoom through series!
Nonfiction
Nonfiction is the second-largest area in the library, and takes up most of the right side of the library. It's arranged by the Dewey Decimal system, which is...
000s: Misc (Helpful, right? It has everything from aliens to coding.)
100s: Philosophy & Psychology
200s: Religion
300s: Social Sciences
400s: Languages
500: Natural Science & Math
600: Applied Science (technology & medicine)
700s: The Arts (from fine arts to sports)
800s: Literature (includes poetry & books about books)
900s: Social Studies & History
Reference
The reference section is made up of books from all of the Dewey categories, only they cost more money. That's really the only difference. When you check out a book or encyclopedia from the Reference section, the librarian has to override the error message that says, "Stop! This student will have to pay lots of money if they have to replace the book!" Just be aware.
Audio Books
There's a small section of audiobooks along the front left wall of the library. They are cds that you can use in a player. Most, but not all, of the audiobooks are English required reading. There are many, many more audiobooks available digitally.
Displays
There are always displays in the library. The purpose of a display is to get you to notice a book. If you see a book you want, please take it. Don't worry about messing up the look of a display. If you take the book, it's actually a compliment to the person who made the display!
Bookmarks
Take a bookmark! You can have one per book. This stand is to the right of the main check-out computer at the front desk.
