Formatting a Bibliography: #5 Citations

MLA

This step continues from the page Formatting a Bibliography: #4 The Header.

1. Your first citation goes directly below the Works Cited line. Do not add an extra space.

2. Make sure your citation is left-aligned.

3. Add a hanging indent. That's where the first line of the citation is aligned to the left margin but all of the following lines are indented.

Watch the following videos on the two ways to add a hanging indent. They show how to add a hanging indent the manual way and how to do it with the Google Doc add-on called Hanging Indent.

4. If you want to add a hanging indent the manual way, follow these steps.

--place your cursor at the end of the first line of the citation,

          --hit Enter,

--make sure your cursor is placed before the second line and hit the tab.

--Do this for each line below the first.

My teacher says I don't need to follow a style guide.

Here's the information you should include about your citation:

  • the sources should be in alphabetical order
  • use appropriate grammar rules (ex: the title of a book or play is in italics, proper nouns are capitalized, etc.)
  • be sure to include all of the information your teacher will need to find the source
    • location where you found it (URL, which database, etc.)
    • author
    • title
    • publisher
    • publication date
    • page numbers you used (if you are going to quote the source, you need to know what page number each quote comes from)
