Levi and Katie Coffin of Fountain City secretly helped more than 2,000 slaves escape to freedom in the North before the Civil War.  People who supported slavery thought the Coffins were criminals.  The Coffins were part of the Underground Railroad, a group of people who helped escaped slaves.  Before he came to Indiana, Levi was a school teacher in North Carolina.
